Cella™
Sustainable biofilm technology for industrial and municipal wastewater treatment
Cella™ is a revolutionary sustainable biofilm technology that delivers top-tier performance, optimisation and it’s friendly to local communities.
Designed to maximise energy efficiency and recovery in the form of biogas from excess biomass, Cella™ promotes a positive energy balance in treatment plants. Furthermore, this technology facilitates the integration of biological phosphorus removal into the treatment process, reducing reliance on chemicals for phosphate precipitation.
Cella™ is a significant leap forward in our commitment to sustainability and delivering Veolia’s mission to Green UP the planet.
WHAT IS Cella™?
Cella™ features the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology while incorporating additional benefits, including a new biobased biofilm support material, AnoxK™ C for biofilm growth, no limitation in biofilm surface with high treatment rates, and an all-in-one solution for the treatment of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. The exposed surface facilitates efficient mass transfer into and out of biofilm, resulting in a highly effective process that can handle high loading rates within a small footprint.
WHY CHOOSE Cella™?
- A valuable resource for municipalities on the path towards decarbonisation.
- All-in-one solution that provides simultaneous biological treatment of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus.
- Handles high load rates in a small footprint due to the large surface area for biofilm growth.
- Minimises fossil-based resources and permits the integration of circular economy principles in biofilm-based biotreatment.
- Maximises energy efficiency and recovery. Biogas from excess biomass, promoting a positive energy balance in treatment plants.
- Facilitate the integration of biological phosphorus removal reducing reliance on chemicals for phosphate precipitation.
- Flexible, simple and robust operation. AnoxK™ C support material provides a large exposed surface area for biofilm due to its small size within the millimeter range, leading to the effortless transfer of contaminants and products into and out of the biofilm.

Features and Benefits

Cella's First Full-Scale Plant
The Svinninge wastewater treatment plant in Holbæk, Denmark, operated by Fors A/S, is undergoing expansion due to operating beyond capacity and anticipates future load increases.
AnoxKaldnes and Kruger A/S proposed Cella for the expansion due to its sustainability, efficiency, and small ecological footprint.
This project is supported by Danish national funding through the Environmental Technology Development and Demonstration Program (MUDP).
